Which Company Should You Use for Car Rental at the Honolulu Airport?

Filed under: Car Rental Honolulu - 29 Aug 2008

Honolulu is a beautiful island with lots to see, do and of course, eat! If you are taking a vacation to Honolulu, I highly recommend renting a car. Having a rental car to use while you are in Honolulu will give you the freedom to do as much as you want while you are on the island.

To save some time for yourself, it is possible to directly pick up your car rental at the Honolulu airport. Instead of wasting time taking a bus from the Honolulu airport to the location of a car rental company, you can arrange to have a rental car waiting for you at the airport once you plane lands.

Although not every company has a rental location directly at the Honolulu airport, most of the major ones do (with the exception of Thrifty, who requires that you take a shuttle to go pick up your rental car). You should use the Internet to find the best deal for yourself, but if you want to know my personal recommendation for getting a car rental at the Honolulu airport, I would have to go with Hertz. This is not only based on my opinion, but also that of my friends and family.

My Opinion on Car Rental in Honolulu

For most people, if you ask them about their top five vacation destinations (regardless of whether they have been there or simply want to go there), Honolulu is a place that will probably be included in the majority of those lists. Because it is such an amazing tropical destination, Honolulu is one of those places that almost anyone can fall in love with. Whether you are the active type that likes to get out and do things or simply want to relax and pamper yourself, Honolulu has something to offer for everyone.

I have been to Honolulu several times, and if my job ever gave me the opportunity, I would strongly consider moving there on a permanent basis. It’s a place I love, and even if I don’t get to move there, I will continue visiting it as much as possible.

Although some people might disagree, to get the most out of a trip to Honolulu, I really think it’s necessary to rent a car. From being able to drive to a place that serves the food you are craving to getting around and experiencing the nightlife, having a rental car while you’re in Honolulu is something I very strongly recommend.

A trip to Hawaii is a great get away and Honolulu is a wonderful place to visit in these jewel-like islands. However, to get around, you’re still going to need transportation. Finding a good car rental in Honolulu is fairly straightforward and simple. There are a few requirements that you’ll need to have, though.

First, make sure that you have your driver’s license. Hawaii is an American state; therefore your out of state license is good until it expires. You’ll also need to make provisions for insurance. If your own auto insurance won’t cover the car rental in Honolulu, you can purchase a supplemental rental policy with the car rental company. Finding the perfect car rental in Honolulu is simple enough.

If you need a car rental in Honolulu, you will have several options from which to choose between. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a presence in Honolulu, as does Advantage Car Rentals. In addition, you can find some other perennial favorites, such as Alamo, Avis and Budget Rental Cars.

One other option is to use a booking service, such as Expedia or Priceline. They can often get very affordable rental rates and you can use them for hotels and airline tickets as well. There are a number of ways in which you can get a good car rental in Honolulu.

A few tips for out of state and foreign drivers, though. Hawaii is a very mountainous state. For those whom have never driven in such conditions, the best option is to take it cautiously at first. Sharp curves and steep drops can be nerve wracking, so take it easy until you are comfortable.

Car Rrental Honolulu Airport

For those flying into Hawaii through the Honolulu International Airport, a car rental at the Honolulu airport is the most convenient option. While there are other car rental facilities throughout the city, simply picking up your car from the airport and going straight to your hotel or resort is the best thing.

You’ll find quite a few options for a car rental at the Honolulu airport. Some big names occupy billboard space, as do some local names. You’ll find that there are two sections for car rental companies, one located onsite, the other located offsite, though connected with shuttle buses.

Onsite Rental Companies: Hertz, Avis, Dollar, National and Budget rental companies are located immediately at the airport.

Offsite Rental Companies: JN Car Rentals, Enterprise Rent a Car, Thrifty, Tradewinds and Alamo are the offsite car rental companies serviced by shuttles.

When booking a car rental at the Honolulu airport, it is important to book it as far ahead of your trip as possible to ensure that you receive the right kind of vehicle. Simply waiting until you arrive is not a good decision, as it could leave you with a vehicle that does not meet your needs.

Types of Vehicles Available: You can find almost any kind of vehicle possible, from economy models to luxury cars and everything in between with a car rental at the Honolulu airport. However, if you require a large vehicle, such as a full size van or SUV, you will need to make special arrangements with the rental company. Many vehicles of this size are not readily available at all times.

Traveling to Hawaii is an exciting option for many. However, arranging for transportation should be something that you take care of ahead of time. There are many things that will need to be taken into consideration prior to making your final decision. First, you’ll need to decide what type of vehicle will best suit your needs before you get a rental car in Honolulu.

Some things that you will need to take into consideration when choosing a rental car in Honolulu are:

Size: While you may only have two people to accommodate within the vehicle, you’ll also need to account for luggage and any other equipment that will be carried with you on your trip. If you are simply going to move luggage from the airport to your accommodations, almost anything will do, but if you intend to take items with you around the island, you’ll need some extra space.

Price: How much are you willing to pay for a rental car in Honolulu? A sedan can usually be found for around $60-70 per day, while specialty vehicles will run you considerably more. Economy vehicles will, of course, be less than this, though not substantially.

Mileage: While you’ll be staying on an island, it is still possible to rack up some miles driving from beaches to other items of interest. Make sure that you get a package with enough miles to suit your needs and that you know the rental companies policy for extra mileage charges for your rental car in Honolulu.

Following a few simple tips will help you get the best rental car in Honolulu for your needs and help ensure your enjoyment of your vacation.

Hawaii has a strictly implemented seat-belt law for front-seat riders, so be certain to buckle up. Children under 4 must be in a car seat (no matter of weight, ask the car rental agent about renting a child seat). Children 18 and under, riding in the backseat, are too demanded by state law to employ seat belts. Jaywalking is usual on the island, so make certain to watch for pedestrians, specially in congested areas.
